How we choose products

What we do

  1. Start with what the birds need. Space, ventilation, feed and safety numbers come from university Extension services (Penn State, NC State, Oregon State, Utah State, Mississippi State and others) and the CDC. We cite them on every page.
  2. Check products against those needs. We read manufacturer specifications and the live Amazon listing and compare claims (for example, a coop's hen count) with Extension guidelines. When a claim does not add up, we say so.
  3. Check every link. Before a product goes on a page we confirm the listing is live and can be bought on Amazon, and we drop products that cannot.

What we do not do

  • We do not run hands-on tests or keep a test flock, and we never claim to.
  • We do not accept payment from manufacturers for placement.
  • We do not show Amazon prices, ratings or review counts, because they change constantly; click through to see current details.

How we make money

We earn a commission when you buy through our links. It does not change what you pay. See our affiliate disclosure.

Updates and corrections

We review guides regularly and when products change. If you spot an error, tell us.
